#277MASTER BLASTER (JAMMIN') Stevie Wonder
The major hit from Stevie Wonder's 'Hotter Than July' album was "Master Blaster (Jammin')". Wonder respected Bob Marley and his profound influence on reggae music. The 2 legends had performed together in the mid-1970s and again in 1979. A joint tour was in the works in 1980, but Marley was diagnosed with cancer.
The superstar of reggae is referenced in "Master Blaster". Wonder wrote and produced the track. He performed clavinet and electric piano on the track which also includes Angela Winbush among the backup vocalists.
The track was issued in the USA in October 1980, prior to the discovery of Marley's condition. The single reigned for 7 weeks at #1 on the American R&B chart and made #5 Pop. It reached the top in parts of Europe and New Zealand. In Britain and Australia, the single peaked at #2. On May 11 1981, Marley passed away. "Master Blaster" remains a highlight in Wonder's repertoire.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.

NEW RELEASE OF THE MONTH
MAY 2014
MICHAELJACKSONXSCAPE [Deluxe Edition]
When Michael Jackson died in 2009, he left behind many unreleased songs in various stages of completion in the archives. With a superstar of his magnitude, it is too tempting not to release these songs for public consumption. While some will argue that these tracks were unreleased for a reason, fans' hunger for new Michael Jackson music has overruled this objection. Besides, it is of interest to see what other ideas MJ was working on while recording albums such as 'Bad', 'Invincible' and 'Dangerous'. Antonio "LA" Reid had the immense task of determining the final track listing for this- the 2nd posthumous album of new material. The earlier such album, 'Michael' was patchy. 'Xscape' is far stronger, with no filler and songs worthy of being added to MJ's catalogue. Reid's decision to use tracks that were almost completed was wise.
The new set opens with its best song: "Love Never Felt So Good". The deluxe edition contains 2 versions of this song Jackson co-wrote with Paul Anka; a solo recording and a duet with Justin Timberlake. Both are great, with JT sounding chuffed to be collaborating alongside his musical hero.
"Chicago" finds Jackson in fine voice, with able production from Timbaland. Next up is another highlight track: "Loving You". Michael created this song and it is magical enough to belong on 'Off The Wall' or 'Thriller'.
"A Place With No Name" is the most curious track of the new album. Michael reworks the 1972 US #1 "A Horse With No Name" from the group America. More credit is due to its original writers than anything added by Jackson or co-writer Dr Freeze.
"Slave to the Rhythm" is an LA & Babyface outtake from the 'Dangerous' sessions and helps maintain the quality. The track is followed by another of the album's strongest tracks: "Do You Know Where Your Children Are". This Jackson penned song was first considered for the 'Bad' album. Here, Jackson tackles a social issue over a Timbaland-led makeover.
On "Blue Gangsta", another project with Dr Freeze circa 1999, Jackson revisits the gangster theme of "Smooth Criminal". This is no match for its predecessor. It's 1 of the album's weakest moments, but passable nevertheless.
Title track 'Xscape" closes the album with some trademark Rodney Jerkins touches. This too, is okay, but lacks anything new to give it a wow- factor. The album is shorter than the usual album length, but the selections flow well and nothing sounds out of place. One can easily imagine this as the album Jackson would be releasing in 2014. In fact, I'd go so far as to claim it as 1 of his best albums.
The deluxe edition includes the original versions of the same tracks. This offers us as an intriguing insight into the process Jackson applied to the recording of his albums. His meticulous attitude meant that some gems did not surface. The re-tweaking of some of this culled material works well on many of the tracks. Contrasting the 2 versions of "Loving You" is a perfect case in point. I for one am very happy that we finally got to hear these "new" songs from a performer whose influence and absence is still felt strongly 5 years after his passing.

#280 SWEET LOVE Anita Baker
Exquisite vocalist Anita Baker was working as a legal secretary at the time she signed with Elektra Records in 1985. Her 1st album with the new label was 'Rapture' with the opening track and 1 of the best examples of what was coined "quiet storm" slow jams: "Sweet Love".
Baker was born in Ohio in 1958 and grew up in Detroit. She began singing in public when 12 years old. In 1975, she joined Chapter 8, but the soul group came to an end 3 years later. The singer then recorded a solo album entitled 'The Songstress'. Despite its lack of success, Baker was noticed. Elektra came calling.
1986 saw the release of 'Rapture', with her breakthrough hit "Sweet Love". The song was written by Baker with Louis A. Johnson and Gary Bias. Michael J. Powell, the producer, had worked with her in Chapter 8. The track was cut in California, with Paulinho da Costa on percussion. "Sweet Love" reached #8 in America and 13 in Britain.
Baker released other successful songs, including "Caught up in the Rapture", "No One in the World" and her US #3 hit "Giving You The Best That I Got". Following the birth of her first child in 1993, the singer's focus switched to raising a family. As the new century dawned, Baker returned to recording. Her most recent release was 'Only Forever' in 2013.

#281 WHO DO YOU THINK YOU'RE FOOLIN' Donna Summer
Donna Summer correctly read that disco was on the way out and her 1980 album 'The Wanderer' hinted at some of the musical directions the artist would be pursuing as the new decade dawned. While still retaining some of the personnel that were key architects of her pivotal 1970s output, this new album was definitely looking ahead. "Who Do You Think You're Foolin'" could have fit in well among the tracks on Summer's 'Once Upon A Time' album, but it had elements of where 80s dance and R&B were heading.
The song was written by Pete Bellotte with Sylvester Levay and Jerry Rix. The former co--produced the track with Giorgio Moroder. Levay and Harold Faltermeyer contributed keyboards and synthesizers while Keith Forsey provided drums and percussion.

#283 SPANISH HARLEM Ben E. King
"Spanish Harlem" is a song about a district of New York. The hit was written by Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector and originally intended for The Drifters to record. In the meantime, Ben E. King quit the vocal group and so the song ended up his 1st solo success when dropped in 1960.
Leiber co-produced the recording with his regular collaborator Mike Stoller. The high production standards of The Drifters' recordings are still present. Leiber & Stoller added gorgeous Latin elements. King's vocals are beautiful and perfectly match the ebb and flow in the musical structure of this soul music staple.
The single peaked at #10 in America. It proved to be a bigger hit when Aretha Franklin recorded her remake in 1971; spending 3 weeks at #1 on the US R&B chart and reaching at #2 Pop. A rare demo of Spector singing "Spanish Harlem" was included on 'Wall of Sound Retrospective' which was issued in 2008.

A disco song dealing with the mad monk Rasputin of Russian history seems a bad idea on paper, but the German group Boney M reached #1 in parts of Europe and Australia with this single in 1978. It peaked at #2 in the UK. The hit was written by Frank Farian, Fred Jay and George Reyam.

#1285 SILLY LOVE SONGS Paul McCartney & Wings
Paul McCartney addresses his critics with "Silly Love Songs". The musicianship and harmonies lift this from the cheesy mess it could have become in lesser hands. It was a US #1 in 1976 written and produced by McCartney, from the group's 'Wings at the Speed of Sound' album.

The list is a ranking made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. This expanded section now includes songs from the last few years. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.

#284 THERE MUST BE AN ANGEL (PLAYING WITH MY HEART) The Eurythmics
The Eurythmics ascended the charts in 1985 with "There Must Be An Angel". Both members of the duo wrote the hit song which first appeared on their 'Be Yourself Tonight' album. The song was cut in Los Angeles. Dave Stewart also handled production. Along with adding her angelic lead vocal to the track, Annie Lennox performed keyboards. Michael Kamen contributed strings and Stevie Wonder delivered a heavenly harmonica solo. As Lennox is a big fan of the latter, the song is in fact dedicated to him.
Selected as the 2nd single from the LP, "... Angel" reached #1 in the UK, Poland, Norway and Ireland. The disc also peaked in the Top 10 in Australia, Europe, Japan, South Africa and New Zealand. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song climbed to #22.
