Born
in Melbourne in 1982, Anthony Callea became a household name in Australia via the TV talent show "Australian Idol". In the 2004 season of the series, Callea finished runner-up. His rendition of "The Prayer" on the show was a spine-tingling demonstration of his professional precision as a promising young vocalist. Singing in both English and Italian, his remake of the song was unleashed as a single. "The Prayer" debuted at #1 in Australia and soon became the country's best selling single by any homegrown act.
Follow-up single "Rain" was an original song, backed with a cover of "Bridge Over Troubled Water". It too reached #1 domestically in 2005. That year, Callea also released his debut album which made #1 on the ARIA Chart. In 2016, Callea scored a 2nd #1 album with 'Backbone'.
Expectations are building for his next album. Due in September, 'ARIA Number 1 Hits In Symphony' will feature Callea and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra re-interpreting chart-topping songs such as "Bleeding Love", "Save The Best For Last" and "End Of The Road".
Callea, outed on a radio show in 2007, is a proud gay celebrity. In 2014, he married fellow entertainer Tim Campbell.
