Bill Withers' lyrics for "Lean On Me" are so universally relatable, that 2 versions of his song reached #1. His original topped the US Pop and R&B charts in 1972. A remake by Club Nouveau was an even bigger worldwide success in 1987. The cover returned the song to #1 in America and reached the Top 10 in Britain, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The soul classic finds the protagonist offering to help another individual and realizing that one day, he too may need the otrher person's support or assistance.
