CAFFE` LATTE` PRESENTS
200 SONGS
WITH THE
BEST LYRICS
A countdown of the 200 songs possessing the best
lyrics of all-time. A playlist on spotify will be added at the end of the week.
#126
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
“…We’re the flowers
in the dustbin,
We’re the
poison
in your human machine...”
Johnny Rotten's stinging lyrics for "God Save The Queen" was anything but a pro-monarchy anthem. He dismisses the royals as mere figureheads that threaten Britain. The lead singer snarls that there is no future for England.
Not only did The Sex Pistols provoke controversy due to the track's subject matter, the band was assaulted in London. Few songs evoke such an extreme reaction.
Released in 1977, the single was swiftly banned. It was unleashed while Britain was celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. Officially, the disc peaked at #2, but it has been suggested that the UK chart was fixed so as to prevent it gaining #1 status.
As
new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a
spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
