R.E.M. composed some breathtaking tracks. "World Leader Pretend" is one of the group's best songs. In terms of structure, it evokes memories of Simon & Garfunkel's "I Am A Rock". It has a gravitas in its introspective verses. Just what lead vocalist Michael Stipe is singing about, remains a mystery. All the same, the song's mood and his vocal approach make the track even more intriguing. It was included on the group's 1988 album 'Green'.
