"The End of the World" is sung from the perspective of a woman after losing the man she loves. Throughout the song, the lyrics recount how day to day activities continue as before, despite the void felt by the singer. Life has moved on, but not for the jilted lover.
Skeeter Davis recorded the original hit version. In 1962, the country singer peaked at #2 on the US Pop Chart. The Carpenters covered a live version of the song in 1975. Later interpretatons include remakes by Agnetha Faltskog (ABBA), Cyndi Lauper and Susan Boyle.
