These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Mony Mony

British performer Billy Idol originally recorded a version of "Mony Mony" in 1981. A live recording was then issued 6 years later. This rendition reached #7 on the British chart and topped Billboard's US Hot 100. 

The original version of the song was recorded by Tommy James & The Shondells. In 1968, the American group made #1 in the UK and peaked at #3 Stateside with the garage rock track. Lead singer James co-wrote the hit.
