SWITZERLAND – 1956
Eurovision was first held in 1956 with Switzerland claiming the
inaugural victory. As no records of the scores exist, we can only speculate how
the outcome was determined. That year, each of the 7 participating countries
offered 2 songs to vote for. Each country – with a sole exception- also sent a
jury. For the only time, a jury could vote for its own nation’s entry. As
Luxembourg’s jurors failed to show, a jury consisting of Swiss nationals
stepped in. Following 1956, each country
was restricted to just one song. Juries could no longer vote for their own
national entry.
