CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS
THE TOP 100
#19 SKYLINE PIGEON {Piano Version}
ELTON JOHN
(1973)
Writers: Elton John & Bernie Taupin
Elton John's long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin considers "Skyline Pigeon" a turning point in their songwriting. It was originally heard on John's debut album 'Empty Sky' in 1969. Taupin regards the ballad the 1st worthy composition he and John created. In 1973, John re-recorded the track during the recording sessions for the 1973 album 'Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player'.
The new interpretation, referred to as "the piano version", was tacked onto the flip side of the hit single from the new LP, "Daniel". The latter reached the Top 10 in the UK, USA , Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
The later version of "Skyline Pigeon" has been included on various CDs. First, it was featured on the 1988 'Lady Samantha' compilation. In 1992, the remake was added to a new compilation entitled 'Rare Masters'.  It was included as a bonus track on the 1995 re-issue of 'Don't Shoot Me...'.
John performed the song at the funeral for Ryan White. The 18 year old died of complications from A.I.D.S. As a teen, he was the target of discrimination due to his HIV status, the result of a contaminated blood transfusion to treat his hemophilia. White was expelled from his school because of his medical condition. His plight highlighted the hysteria and ignorance that was rife at the time concerning A.I,D.S. John befriended White and his mother and assisted the family financially. The youth's grave has some lines from the song on the tombstone.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
Each week, 2 new songs from the remaining Top 100 are added, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 on the other weekdays. Check back here for an update of the 2000.
