SPACE ODDITY
“…Here am I
sitting in a tin can,
far above the world.
Planet earth is blue &
there’s nothing I can do...
David Bowie's "Space Oddity" launched his career. It was originally issued as a single in 1969. It reached #5 in Britain. When it was re-released in 1975, the song became Bowie's first UK #1. By then, it had already charted in America and Australia.
At the time of its original release, space was an exciting new frontier. The USA placed the first man on the moon in July 1969. Bowie's song was timely. It introduced us to the character Major Tom, a recurring figure in the British artist's music over many decades.
The lyrics convey the desolation of space. Major Tom's craft is described as a "tin can". The astronaut is vulnerable and finds himself a considerable distance from his home planet. Major Tom can see our Earth from space.
Although the mission begins routinely, a problem arises. Ground control loses contact with the spacecraft. Bowie's self-penned song reminds us of the perils associated with space travel.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
