"Elton's Song" was written at a time when being gay was not tolerated and often attracted violent reactions. The tender ballad involves a schoolboy with a crush on a fellow student. The verses hint that it is unlikely his attraction will ever blossom into a relationship.
Elton John recorded the song for his 1981 album 'The Fox'. It was John's first song to deal directly with gay issues.  A music video that was banned in some countries was created for the song.
Tom Robinson wrote the lyrics. He was a prominent gay English singer / songwriter at the time. John composed the music for the love song.
