These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Banks Of The Ohio

Olivia Newton-John made a pop audience aware of the song "Banks Of the Ohio" in 1971. Her pop / country crossover interpretation barely dented the US Hot 100 but was a Top 10 hit single in Australia, Canada and Britain.
One of the earliest recorded versions of the murder ballad was by The Blue Sky Boys back in 1936 under its full original title "Down On The Banks Of The Ohio".
