Don McLean penned "American Pie" as a reflection on the fateful day that rock 'n' roll pioneer Buddy Holly died in a plane crash in 1959 and of the state of society back then. The song's lyrics have been analysed since its release in 1971.In 2015, a manuscript of those lyrics sold for $US 1.2 million.
