HELLO, DOLLY!

Streisand portrayed Dolly Levi in the screen adaptation of “Hello, Dolly!”. The film premiered in 1969. Its title song is a duet with the legendary Louis Armstrong who was also cast in the motion picture.

HIDEAWAY

In Britain, the ‘Guilty Pleasures’ album is known as ‘Guilty Too’. “Hideaway” is a lush track written by Barry Gibb with his son Ashley. The parent album reached #5 on the US Album Chart.

LIFE STORY

Brothers Barry and Robin Gibb co-wrote “Life Story”. The track from ‘Guilty’ features Lee Ritenour on guitar, David Hungate on bass as well as Barry on acoustic guitar and background vocals.

LOVER MAN (OH, WHERE CAN YOU BE?)

Streisand released ‘Simply Streisand’ in 1967. It was the first release after she renegotiated her contract with Columbia. Streisand recorded “Lover Man” on March 20, 1967 in New York City.

NOT WHILE I’M AROUND

Streisand took on another gem from the Stephen Sondheim canon: “Not While I’m Around” for inclusion on ‘The Broadway Album’. The song is from the musical “Sweeney Todd”. Richard Baskin produced her cover version.

WHEN IN ROME (I DO AS THE ROMANS DO)

Michael Berniker, who had produced Streisand’s first 3 studio albums, was unavailable for her next project, so, Bob Mersey handled production. The new album was entitled ‘People’ and contained a version of the song from “Funny Girl” which starred Streisand as Fanny Brice on Broadway at that time. “When In Rome (I Do As The Romans Do)” includes some words spoken by Streisand in Italian. ‘People’ was nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy Award.

SONGBIRD

Recorded in February 1978, the title track for ‘Songbird’ closes the album which was released in May of the same year. Jeff Porcaro contributed on drums. “Songbird” was written by Dave Wolfert and Stephen Nelson.

ALL OF MY LIFE

Found on the 1996 ‘The Mirror Has Two Faces’ soundtrack album, “All Of My Life” was added as a bonus track. It is not heard in the film. Streisand co-wrote the song with Marvin Hamlisch and the Bergmans.

KISS ME IN THE RAIN

Recorded in mid- July 1979 for the ‘Wet’ album, “Kiss Me In The Rain” features session musicians Jeff Porcaro, David Hungate and a solo from Jeff Baxter (ex-Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers). The love song was issued as the follow-up to “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)”, Streisand’s #1 duet hit with Donna Summer.

WHERE IS IT WRITTEN?

The opening song from ‘Yentl’ finds the title character questioning social norms. She possesses ability and a thirst for knowledge, but education is only offered to men. In the film, the song lyrics reveal what is going on in Yentl’s mind. Michel Legrand composed the music. Married couple Alan and Marilyn Bergman wrote the lyrics.
