The Beatles disbanded in 1970. John Lennon decided to create a new Christmas song the following year. As well as sending out a celebratory message, the lyrics promoted a strong anti-war message. It also asks a provocative question: “…what have you done?”.

Unleashed in 1971 in America and the following year in Britain, the single has since become a seasonal staple.

Lennon co-wrote the song with Ono. The couple co-produced it with Phil Spector. Its first run saw it climb to #4. Since then, the disc has re-entered the UK chart several times. In 1980, the single peaked at #2. Re-issued after Lennon’s assassination, it was kept out of the top position by another of the former Beatle’s classic songs: “Imagine”.
