1981

THE 200

 GREATEST SONGS

MCMLXXXI

It was the year of the first space shuttle flight. Prince Charles married Diana. Anwar Sadat was assassinated. Solidarity strikes brought martial law to Poland. Ronald Reagan was elected President of the United States. Riots broke out in British cities against Margaret Thatcher’s government. Audiences flocked to the cinema, enjoying films like ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, ‘Endless Love’, ‘On Golden Pond’, ‘Porky’s’, ‘Reds’ and the latest 007 instalment ‘For Your Eyes Only’.

Here are 200 examples of the music that was the soundtrack for the year 1981:

1

UNDER PRESSURE

Queen & David Bowie

Under Pressure: the strange story of Queen & David Bowie's hit – Auralcrave

Arguably the coolest collab ever, was recorded at Mountain Studios in Montreux. The impromptu session spawned one of the biggest hits for both titans of British rock.

I LOVE ROCK ‘N ROLL

Joan Jett & The Blackhearts

I Love Rock n Roll by Joan Jett and the Blackheads US vinyl single.png

When Joan Jett first heard the original version of “I Love Rock ‘N Roll” by The Arrows, she recognized its hit potential. The former Runaways member had a task ahead to get a remake out, but her determination paid off. It met with global success and remains a rock anthem to this day.

3

ELTON’S SONG

Elton John

The fox (Elton John album) coverart.jpg

“Elton’s Song”, a tender deep cut from Elton John's ‘The Fox’ album deals with unrequited love from a gay perspective. Few songs dealt with the subject matter so sensitively at the time. The music video for the track emphasizes the protagonist’s state.

4

WAITING FOR A GIRL LIKE YOU

Foreigner

GirlWaiting.jpg

Foreigner was known for its rock sound as exemplified on past hits such as “Feels Like The First Time” and “Long Way From Home”. The group unleashed a power ballad as the follow-up single for "Urgent" from the ‘4’ album. Thomas Dolby contributed synthesizer on the track which was produced by group member Mick Jones and Robert John “Mutt” Lange.

5

I CAN’T GO FOR THAT

(NO CAN DO)

Hall & Oates

Hall-Oates-ICan'tGoForThat.jpg

The second single off the ‘Private Eyes’ album not only made #1 in the U.S.A. Pop Chart, but also topped the Soul listing: a rare occurrence for a white act.

6

VIENNA

Ultravox

 Ultravox - Vienna.png

Ultravox easily could have faded into obscurity had the group not undergone some personnel changes that included recruiting Midge Ure. The revamped outfit finally scored a major hit single with “Vienna”. The song is still remembered as a defining moment in synth-pop

7

MEMORY

Barbra Streisand

Memory single cover.jpg

The stage musical “Cats” premiered in London in 1981. Barbra Streisand covered the song for her ‘Memories’ compilation that same year. Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the music and Trevor Nunn wrote the lyrics.

8

WHILE YOU SEE A CHANCE

Steve Winwood

While You See a Chance Steve Winwood.jpg

After stints in the groups Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith, Steve Winwood issued his solo debut album in 1977. ‘Arc Of A Diver’ followed and expanded his audience. “While You See A Chance” remains one of his most beautiful songs. It was co-written with Will Jennings.

9

I LET THE MUSIC SPEAK

ABBA

2001/2012 re-issue. The cover uses a slightly different picture, has been color-corrected and the group's logo and the album name have been enlarged and centered.

When ABBA began sessions to record ‘The Visitors’, the band members were unaware that it would be its last. The disc finds the Swedish band embracing new musical directions for the new decade. “I Let The Music Speak” is one of the group’s underrated and overlooked gems. Should new tracks emerge – as promised- later this year, the ABBA catalogue could have at least one new addition.

IN THE AIR TONIGHT

Phil Collins

In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins handwriting font.png

Phil Collins had only recently stepped out from behind his drum kit as lead vocalist for the band Genesis before launching his solo career with this signature song. There is an urban myth that the song deals with a man looking on while another drowns. This is pure fiction.
