THE RECORD BOOK

MOST SUCCESSFUL PERFORMERS

Since its inception in 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest has seen many winners return to represent their country again. Lys Assia, who sang the 1956 winner “Refrain”, competed again representing Switzerland in 1957 and 1958.

Some winners have returned and achieved another strong finish. Among the best achievers is Italy’s Gigliola Cinquetti. She won in 1964 and represented Italy again 10 years later. Her song “Si” was that year’s runner-up. Other high achievers include Carola, Charlotte and Lena.

Only one Eurovision winner has returned and achieved a second win. That record is held by Johnny Logan. He performed the Irish winning entries “What’s Another Year?” in 1980 and “Hold Me Now” 7 years later. In 1992, “Why Me?” claimed first prize. That Irish entry was written by Johnny Logan. Having also penned “Hold Me Now”, he has been involved in either singing and / or writing 2 winning Eurovision songs.

Loreen may become the first female performer to score 2 Eurovision wins. She represented Sweden in 2012 with “Euphoria”. That song proved to be a very popular winner. This year, she is the favourite to win with “Tattoo”. If this comes to pass, Loreen will be only the second performer to sing 2 Eurovision winning entries (along with the aforementioned Johnny Logan).
