 THE 100 ESSENTIAL SONGS BY

TINA TURNER

Born Anna Mae Bullock in Tennessee in 1939, she impressed Ike Turner when she sang at one of his gigs. He asked her to join his group The Kings Of Rhythm. In time, she adopted the stage name Tina Turner and married Ike.

After years in a stormy marriage, she decided to leave him. Tina rebuilt her career and enjoyed a revival as a soloist, beginning with her international hit “What’s Love Got To Do With It” and the album ‘Private Dancer’.

All over the world, fans mourned her loss in May 2023. Tina leaves behind an unmatched legacy of funk, rock, pop and R&B tracks, celebrated here with this countdown of her 100 most essential recordings.

WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO WITH IT

1984

Tina Turner may have been a rock and soul legend by the start of the 1980s, but a number one single had eluded her thus far, despite releasing some sensational singles. She had scored a hit with “Let’s Stay Together” in 1983. That set her up comfortably for the release of a new album project entitled ‘Private Dancer’. Various producers were brought in by her manager Roger Davies to contribute to the LP. Terry Britten was one of them. The British songwriter offered a song he had co-written with Graham Lyle. Britten produced Tina’s recording of “What’s Love Got To Do With It”.

Once released as a single, the disc gave Tina her first US #1 single. The disc also topped the Canadian and Australian charts. In Britain, the single peaked at #3. Tina took home Grammy Awards for “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, winning in 4 categories: Record & Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance- Female and Rock Vocal Performance – Female. Its worldwide success helped establish Tina as one of the leading female performers. Her comeback was now complete.
