RING OF FIRE

Johnny Cash 1963

June Carter realized that she had fallen for Johnny Cash. She was also aware that any relationship with him was fraught with problems. Cash was taking drugs but Carter could not resist. Both were married to other partners. This inspired her to write “Ring Of Fire”. She co-wrote it with Merle Kilgore. Eventually, Cash and Carter became closer and they married in 1968. Kilgore was best man. Cash credited his wife with beating his drug addiction. “Ring of Fire” was originally recorded by June’s sister Anita Carter. Cash re-imagined the song when he decided to cover it. with the inclusion of mariachi horns. His remake topped Billboard’s Country Chart for 7 weeks. It was a Top 20 hit on the US Hot 100.
