Mick Jagger drew inspiration from depictions of the Indian goddess Kali. She is shown with a pointed red tongue sticking out of her mouth. Impressed by the work of art student Jon Pasche, Jagger asked him to create a logo for the new label, Rolling Stones Records. In 1971, ‘Sticky Fingers’ was the first album to feature the logo. Since then, it has represented the group so effectively that the lips and tongue alone require no words or inclusion of the band’s name. Pasche was paid £50 for his work.
