SOLITARY MAN
“…Don’t know that I will,
but until I can
find me,
the girl who’ll stay &
won’t play games behind me
I’ll be what I
am.
A solitary man...”
When "Solitary Man" was originally released in 1966, Neil Diamond was an unknown performer. He had however, been noticed for his songwriting talent. Later that year, Diamond would see one of his compositions, "I'm A Believer", become a #1 hit single for The Monkees.
"Solitary Man" became Diamond's first single to chart, but only reached #55 in the U.S.A. His next singles fared better. After scoring Top 10 hits with "Cherry, Cherry". "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon" and "Sweet Caroline", Diamond became a household name. "Solitary Man" was re-issued in 1970. This time, the single peaked at #21. It reached #6 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. In Australia, the disc peaked at #36.
Diamond was more personal when writing the lyrics to "Solitary Man". The verses recount situations when the protagonist was betrayed or let down by the objects of his affection. While the song offers hope that he will find that faithful partner one day, he accepts his lonely state until then.
