VINCENT
“…I could have told you Vincent,
this
world was never meant
for one
as beautiful as you...”
Don McLean penned "Vincent" as a tribute to the legendary painter Vincent Van Gogh. The Dutch post-Impressionist figure was born in 1953 and had a profound influence on art. He committed suicide in 1890, aged only 37.
The song was included on McLean's 'American Pie' album which was released in 1971. The following year, "Vincent" topped the British chart and reached the Top 3 in Canada and Australia. The disc peaked at #12 in the U.S.
McLean's lyrics refer to one of Van Gogh's paintings: 'The Starry Night'. The artist painted it while staying at an asylum in France, completing it a year prior to his death. Sadly, throughout his life, Van Gogh was affected by financial woes and poor romantic choices.
To this day, McLean's poignant song is played at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is highly celebrated today, but was not appreciated during his lifetime.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be
added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
