By the early 1980s, Billy Joel had achieved an enviable string of radio staples. His albums were reliably among the era's best sellers. Joel's commercial success was a significant accomplishment, yet he was still not regarded in the same high regard as singer/ songwriters such as Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen. On his 1982 album 'The Nylon Curtain', Joel proved his mettle. This was most evident on the track "Goodnight Saigon".
Joel set the song in Vietnam. American troops are confronting the reality of the bloody conflict. "Goodnight Saigon" makes the war come alive for us, as effectively as the most powerful Vietnam War films.
