Janis Ian was still in her teens when she penned "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)". The song deals with the prejudice directed at African-Americans.
Ian's lyrics revolve around an interracial couple. The protagonist loves an African-American. Wherever they go, the couple is greeted by disapproving looks.
Being young, the protagonist feels pressured to break up with her partner. She hopes that colour will cease to be an issue in the future.
Released in 1967, "Society's Child" reached the Top 15 in both America and Canada. It became Ian's first hit single. At the time, the disc was very controversial because of its subject matter.
