BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
Don’t Turn Around
By the time Ace Of Base enjoyed international success with "Don't Turn Around" in 1994, the Swedish group had already achieved 2 major #1s: "All That She Wants" and "The Sign". The single topped the Canadian chart and made the Top 10 in America, Britain, Europe and New Zealand.
Ace Of Base brought worldwide attention to the song, but it had previously reached #1 in New Zealand and the UK in 1988 for the British reggae band Aswad. This version was not the original.
Albert Hammond wrote "Don't Turn Around" with Diane Warren. Luther Ingram released the first single version of the song, charting with it in 1987. His interpretation climbed to #55 on the US R&B Chart.
The earliest recorded version of the song belongs to Tina Turner. Her rendition was used as the B-side for the "Typical Male" single in 1986. The A-side peaked at #2 in America.
