BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
Fever
"Fever" is a song that has been re-interpreted by a slew of musicians. Among the best known are versions by Peggy Lee in 1959; Madonna in 1993 and Beyoncé in 2010.
Eddie Cooley and John Davenport wrote the song. The latter was a pseudonym for Otis Blackwell. Little Willie John recorded the original, releasing it in 1959. The disc topped the US R&B Chart and reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Lee's remake became the more successful interpretation. She changed some of the lyrics and it soon became the singer's signature song. Her remake reached the Top 10 in America, the UK and Australia.
