For the title track of his 1980 album 'The River', songwriter Bruce Springsteen drew inspiration from his sister Ginny's life. At age 18, she found herself pregnant and married the father. In order to support his family, he (Mickey) started working in construction. The couple found it tough making ends meet.
"The River" changes the pregnant character's name to Mary as Springsteen himself assumes the role of main protagonist. He recounts the daily struggle.
It's an all too familiar scenario many others find themselves in. Almost 4 decades later, many can still relate to "The River". Fortunately, Ginny and Mickey are still together.
