WE DIDN’T START THE FIRE
“…We didn’t start the fire,it was always
burning,since the world’s been turning.We didn’t start the fire,no we didn’t
light it,but we tried to fight it...”
The idea for "We Didn't Start The Fire" came to writer Billy Joel during a conversation with a young man. The youth was complaining about all the issues his generation had to deal with. Joel reminded him that there were serious threats and concens during his 20s too. The seed for the song was planted. Joel proceeded to list events and people that had made a major impact on the world during his lifteime.
Having just turned 40, Joel decided to write a song recounting several historical figures and key moments. These included celebrities such as Buddy Holly, Marlon Brando, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. He mentioned in the lyrics leaders such as: Josef Stalin, John F. Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth I and Charles de Gaulle. Joel referred to events such as Watergate, punk rock, A.I.D.S. and the arrival of television.
"We Didn't Start The Fire" spans the years 1949 to 1989. The song reached #1 in America in 1989. It was the lead single from his 'Storm Front' album.
