BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
Leaving On A Jet Plane
Although originally heard on Peter, Paul & Mary's 'Album 1700' in 1967, the trio's "Leaving On A Jet Plane" was not issued as a single until 2 years later. The disc reached #1 in America and Canada. On the British chart, the single peaked at #2.
"Leaving On A Jet Plane" was written by John Denver. The American musician recorded the original version of the song for his 1966 album 'John Denver Sings'. At the time, he was relatively unknown. The song was listed on the LP sleeve under its original title: "Babe, I Hate To Go". He re-recorded it under the new title for his 1969 album 'Rhymes And Reasons'. Denver's chart success began in 1971 with the US #2 hit "Take Me Home Country Roads".
