OLIVIA
NEWTON-JOHN
Olivia Newton-John was born in England in 1948 but her family migrated to Australia. She grew up in Melbourne where she began pursuing musical ambitions during her teens.
A victory at a talent contest earned her a trip to London where Newton-John formed a duo with fellow Aussie expat Pat Carroll. She later joined the group Toomorrow and starred in a movie with the band. This led to her joining Cliff Richard's touring act and, in 1971, her 1st chart hit "If Not For You" (a cover of a Bob Dylan song). The single reached #1 on the US Adult Contemporary Chart and made the Top 10 in Britain, Canada and Australia.
"Banks Of The Ohio' gave Newton-John her first #1 when it topped the Australian chart that same year. 1973's "Let Me Be There" won a Grammy Award in the Country category. In 1974, she represented the UK at Eurovision, losing to ABBA's "Waterloo".
That year, Newton-John made #1 in Australia again as well as in America and Canada with "I Honestly Love You". Follow-up "Have You Never Been Mellow" did the same in the 2 North American territories. On the US AC chart, she placed no less than 8 songs at #1 in the years between 1974-8.
Newton-John became an even bigger worldwide star in 1978 with her role in the box office hit film 'Grease'. Its soundtrack was a major seller, spawning the #1 hits "Summer Nights" and "You're The One That I Want" (both duets with her co-star John Travolta).
Another film role gave Newton-John 2 more #1s in 1980: "Xanadu" (with the Electric Light Orchestra) reached #1 in Britain while "Magic" did the same Stateside.
Next, "Physical" spent 10 weeks at #1 in 1981 on the American chart. She married actor Matt Lattanzi in 1984. Daughter Chloe was born 2 years later.
A medley of 'Grease' hits entitled "Grease Megamix" reached #1 in Australia in 1990. Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years later. This century has seen her open a Cancer & Wellness Centre in Melbourne. She continues performing and recording. Recent releases include Christmas albums with John Travolta and John Farnham.
