By the end of the 1960s, society had undergone significant reform. The civil rights movement, the War in Vietnam, Women's Liberation and the Stonewall riots all played a fundamental role in shifting attitudes. These events sent ripples throughout the Western world. 
In 1972, Helen Reddy captured the mood of society, focusing on women's rights for "I Am Woman". Women were gaining political and social power. Reddy co-wrote the song with fellow Australian songwriter Ray Burton.
Issued in 1972, the title track from her album swiftly became an anthem. The single reached #1 in America and Canada. In Australia (where Reddy was born) the disc peaked at #2.
