Since the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest, 51 countries have competed in the annual event. This look back features each country in order of appearance and highlights that nation’s best entry so far.

EUROVISION COUNTRIES

 

1993

Ireland equalled the record for most victories at the Eurovision Song Contest shared with France and Luxembourg at the time. The 1993 Irish triumph also mirrored the previous back-to-back wins of Spain, Luxembourg and Israel.

Three new nations joined the ESC family. Aspirant countries battled it out in a special ‘pre-qualifying round’. Only 3 would progress to the Final. The lucky trio consisted of: (in order of performance during the Grand Final) Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. Unsuccessful contenders would have to wait.

While the former and the latter continue participating, Bosnia & Herzegovina was most recently represented in 2016.

The Eurovision Song Contest went further north than ever before with Bergen as the host city. In Norway, Iceland made its debut on the ESC stage.

Controversially, winner Sandra Kim claimed she was 15 when she was in fact only 13 years of age. The rules now stipulate that all performers must be 16 or older.

Smokey Robinson penned "Being With You" for Kim Carnes. She had just scored a hit with a remake of his former group The Miracles' "More Love". When Robinson decided to release the song himself, it peaked at #2 in America. His love song was kept out of #1 by "Bette Davis Eyes", by.... Carnes!

The Eurovision Song Contest returned to host city Dublin again in 1981, where Bucks Fizz won with "Making Your Mind Up". This year saw the arrival of Cyprus: another nation that, after many years of participation, has yet to claim a victory.

The Eurovision Song Contest expanded its boundaries again in 1980 with the debut of Morocco. This was the first (and to date the only) African nation to compete. Its entry also marked the first song performed in Arabic. Morocco finished 18^th in a field of 19. It has not returned to the ESC since.
