Since the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest, 51 countries have competed in the annual event. This look back features each country in order of appearance and highlights that nation’s best entry so far.

1956
The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in Lugano, Switzerland in 1956, drawing inspiration from Italy’s Sanremo Festival. Only 7 countries competed, with 2 songs each. The Swiss entry “Refrain” became the first winner. In order of performance that year the founding nations were:
