BEFORE IT WAS A
HIT SONG…
These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Initially, The Bee Gees had written "How Deep Is Your Love" for Yvonne Elliman to sing on the 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack album. Label chief and the group's manager Robert Stigwood encouraged the trio to record the ballad. The Gibb brothers offered Elliman the upbeat "If I Can't Have You" instead. Her version reached #1 in America in May 1978. It peaked at #4 in Britain.
The Bee Gees had previously released a take on the song. If those that had purchased the group's international smash "Stayin' Alive" played its flip side, they would have discovered the original version of "I Can't Have You", a few months prior to the release of Elliman's remake.
