THE 100 GREATEST SONGS
MCMLXXXIX

The final year of the 20th century had the planet concerned about Y2K; the introduction of a new currency: the Euro; the tragic Columbine school shooting; Boris Yeltsin resigned from the Russian presidency and impeachment proceedings commenced against US President Bill Clinton. Napster emerged. At the movies, crowds flocked to see ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’, ‘The Matrix’ and ‘American Beauty’. Here are 100 examples of the diversity of music that was the soundtrack for the year 1999.
