Here are 100 songs that stand out – some won, some qualified for the Grand Final while others were culled early; but each one carried its nation’s hopes for Eurovision glory in the annual music event.

AySel & Arash

AZERBAIJAN 2009

Few countries have enjoyed as strong a debut followed by years of successful entries as Azerbaijan. It first participated in 2008, finishing in 7th place. The following year this lively Middle Eastern-flavoured song landed in 3rd position. In 2010, Azerbaijan came 5th. With "Running Scared" in 2011, the country secured a victory, bringing the ESC to Baku the following year.

YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE

Sergey Lazarev

RUSSIA 2016

Russia has never had a better stage presentation at the ESC: breathtaking, high-tech and innovative. The song was catchy too, executed well by Sergey Lazarev. This remains the most awe-inspiring performance ever seen at Eurovision. It easily qualified for the Grand Final, where the song captured the highest public vote that year. Overall, the song finished in 3rd place; but deserved to win.

JE NE SAIS QUOI

Hera Bjork

ICELAND 2010

Despite a French title, the remainder of the song was sung in English. Iceland has yet to win at Eurovision. This remains its best offering to date, even though it finished 19th in the Grand Final.

Kate Ryan

BELGIUM 2006

A poor live performance cost this dance track a spot in the Grand Final. Its title means "I adore you" in French, but these are the only lyrics not sung in English.

SPIRIT IN THE SKY

Keiino

NORWAY 2019

Featuring lyrics performed in English and Sami,  this was a mix of culture and dance music that proved popular with televoters. In Tel Aviv this year, the catchy track ended the Grand Final ranked 6th.
