THE BIGGEST CONTROVERSIES
Of the
EUROVISION SONG CONTEST
(1956 - 2019)
From its inaugural year, the Eurovision Song Contest has had more than its fair share of controversial moments. This is a special look back on 30 significant upsets in chronological order.

1995
Is “Nocturne” actually a song?
The Eurovision Song Contest was held in Ireland for the third consecutive year in 1995. For a change, the Irish entry finished in 14th place. The winning song was “Nocturne”, representing Norway and performed by the group Secret Garden.
Eligibility for the ESC requires lyrics. While “Nocturne” was not an instrumental, it consisted of just 24 words! The song was mostly music and its win provoked some protestation.
