 GREATEST DRUMMERS

It’s hard to imagine any song with a driving beat without a drum kit powering the overall sound. This list pays tribute to the drummers whose work has had the greatest impact and influence on rock and pop music.

COZY POWELL

When you have played drums as a member of Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, The Jeff Beck Group and Emerson, Lake & Powell, there can be no denying your profound influence on heavy metal and hard rock. Witness his power on “Mars The Bringer Of War” as part of the latter trio.

CARMINE APPICE

Carmine Appice’s skill is best demonstrated in a live setting. He has influenced many high profile drummers, including Queen’s Roger Taylor and Phil Collins. Appice has been a member of Vanilla Fudge and Beck, Bogert & Appice. As a session drummer, he has toured with bands such as Pink Floyd and recorded with Brian May, Slash and Rod Stewart. Appice also co-wrote 2 hits for the latter rock star: “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” and “Young Turks”.

MAUREEN TUCKER

Maureen “Moe” Tucker’s minimalist approach to drumming helped make The Velvet Underground (& Nico) one of the most influential acts in rock music. Like the drummer, the band and its recordings never demanded the spotlight, but their impact on those they converted was, and is, immense. Listen out for her skill on “I’m Waiting For The Man”, where during the recording session, her drum was so shaky, she had to lay it on the floor to play it.

LARRY MULLEN JR.

Many U2 tracks benefit from the beat pounded on the drum kit by the group’s drummer. Larry Mullen Jr. is one of the founding members of the Irish rock act. His drumming is the engine that powers the anthemic “Sunday Bloody Sunday”.

FRED BELOW

It is difficult to imagine Chicago blues without the talented Fred Below. He is credited for creating blues drumming. Below played on tracks cut by the likes of Muddy Waters, Elmore James, John Lee Hooker and Dinah Washington. For rock fans, his legacy continues to this day with seminal recordings by Chuck Berry. These include: “Johnnie B. Goode”, “Rock And Roll Music” and “School Days”.
