 GREATEST DRUMMERS

It’s hard to imagine any song with a driving beat without a drum kit powering the overall sound. This list pays tribute to the drummers whose work has had the greatest impact and influence on rock and pop music.

PHIL COLLINS

He may not be the most influential nor the best drummer, but Phil Collins is arguably one of the best known. It’s important to note that he resided in the shadows, behind his drum kit while Peter Gabriel was the frontman for the English group Genesis. When the latter quit, a fruitless search for a replacement ended with the group decision that Collins was the best option. Of course, he continued as drummer but was thrust into the spotlight as the voice of Genesis. Collins’ profile extended even further when he launched his solo career in the early 1980s. He became an in-demand session drummer (eg. on Frida’s ‘I Know There’s Something Going On”). Among his most revered example of drumming prowess is Collins’ own hit “In The Air Tonight”.
