As a result, in some territories, including the United States, the song was credited to Wham! featuring George Michael. Acclaimed producer Jerry Wexler tried to capture what George wanted. After 2 unsuccessful attempts with producers, the singer realized that he had to be at the helm to realize his vision for the recording. The end product proved that the public was ready for another side of George. It established him as a serious artist and was further proof of his developing talent as a songwriter and producer.  “Careless Whisper” reached #1 in Britain, America (reigning for 3 weeks in both markets), Canada, Australia and South Africa.
