CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS
THE TOP 100
#83 IT'S A SHAME
THE SPINNERS
(1970)
Writers: Stevie Wonder, Lee Garrett & Syreeta Wright
The Spinners had been languishing on the Motown label for some years before finally cracking the US Pop Top 20 with "It's A Shame". Having formed back in the 1950s, the vocal group was finally reaping the rewards of their persistence.
Around the time of this release, Stevie Wonder married 1 of its co-writers, Syreeta Wright. They remained a couple until 1972. Wonder also collaborated with the other composer, Lee Garrett, to create his 1970 hit "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours". They would later write Jermaine Jackson's solo 1980 smash, "Let's Get Serious".
Wonder produced "It's A Shame". The track begins with a typically Motown intro but gradually builds into a soulful vocal delivery that gives the recording its indelible quality. In the USA, the single reached #14 Pop and 4 R&B. It peaked at #20 in Britain.
Sadly, Motown neglected the group, even after its success with the aptly titled "It's A Shame". As was the case with The Isley Brothers and Gladys Knight & The Pips, the label treated these legendary groups as a low priority. At the time, Motown was moving to the West Coast and focusing on Diana Ross' post-Supremes solo career. The Spinners, like the Isleys and Knight & The Pips, had to leave Motown to gain greater success. In 1972, the group changed record labels. The Spinners enjoyed an impressive string of hits for Atlantic and worked closely with producer Thom Bell. New vocalist Philippe Wynne's recruitment contributed to their new sound.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the remaining Top 100 is added each weekday, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
