Barbra Streisand had wanted to make a movie version of the Isaac Bashevis Singer play "Yentl" for several years. At first, it was not intended as a musical, but the actress was persuaded to perform songs for the film. Streisand recruited Alan and Marilyn Bergman to work on the soundtrack. The married couple provided lyrics to Michel Legrand's music. "The Way He Makes Me Feel" was the 1st single lifted off the 'Yentl' soundtrack.
The single featured 2 versions of the song. The A-side was a re-recording in a more contemporary setting. The version used in the motion picture, (the B-side of the disc), was more orchestral, in keeping with the time in which the story was set.
The song finds the title character at the moment of her sexual awakening. Although she is growing aware of her feelings for Avigdor, Yentl must continue concealing her affection as he does not know she is a woman pretending to be a man. Streisand's vocal is 1 of her sexiest and apt for the context in which it appears during the film.
The single peaked at #40 on the US Pop chart and 34 in Canada. In both countries, the ballad reached the top of the Adult Contemporary charts. It is Streisand's most recent AC #1 hit. The soundtrack album went Top 10 in the USA and various European countries.
"The Way He Makes Me Feel" was nominated for an Academy Award, as was another song from 'Yentl': "Papa Can You Hear Me?". The Irene Cara hit "Flashdance... What A Feeling" collected the Best Original Song Oscar, but 'Yentl' did triumph in the Best Original Score category that year.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
Each week, 1 new songs from the remaining Top 10 will be added, while another 2 are also included from #1501-2000 on the other weekdays. Check back here for an update of the 2000.
