TOO LOW FOR ZERO: ELTON JOHN

 [1983]
'Too Low For Zero' was a key release for performer Elton John. It was the first full album in years co-written with regular collaborator Bernie Taupin. The LP marked a commercial and critical success akin to his heights during the 1970s. John's previous album 'Jump Up' was patchy at best. 'Too Low For Zero' was packed with hit singles and strong album tracks. The modern 80s design of the album cover announced this was a special release.  Opening track "Cold As Christmas (In The Middle Of The Year)" contains the lyrical skill that matches some of Taupin's best in the preceding decade. The temperature is used as a symbol of a disintegrating relationship. This is followed by the crowd favourite "I'm Still Standing". The celebratory hit is followed by the title track, adopting a different sound for John, as is the case with "Crystal". "Religion" is a fun cut with an astute statement on matters of faith. "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" is another popular standout. "Kiss The Bride" is an upbeat fun track. "Whipping Boy" is the sole low point on the LP. "Saint" and "One More Arrow" are pretty and sombre songs that close this satisfying album. It is rich in quality and diversity.
Highlight tracks: Cold As Christmas (In The Middle Of the Year); I'm Still Standing; I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues & Kiss The Bride.
