THE MOTOWN SOUND:

THE WRITER/PRODUCERS
 Pt.1- The Early Years
Motown Records was a constant presence on the pop chart throughout the 1960s and continued beyond that golden era with a roster that boasted an abundance of talent. Along with its flagship acts, the label attracted creative artists that played a key role in shaping the 'Motown Sound'. The company was served well by a capable pool of songwriters and producers. Some were key architects of Motown's success and crossover appeal.

Not only did the astute Gordy set up the company, he was very 'hands on' when it came to selecting new releases and matching the talent with his signings. Prior to foundi8ng the label, he had owned a record store and honed his skills as a songwriter for Jackie Wilson. Gordy co-wrote "Reet Petite" and other Wilson R&B gems.
Gordy helped pen the first national hit single by The Miracles, "Bad Girl" in 1959. Gordy next worked on early Motown hit singles "You Got  What It Takes" (Marv Johnson) and "Money" (Barrett Strong). In 1960, Gordy co-wrote The Miracles' "Shop Around" with Smokey Robinson. This became Motown's first release in Britain and the label's 1st #1 on the Billboard R&B chart. Along with co-writing for the likes of Etta James, Gordy helped make stars of singers such as Mary Wells, The Contours and The Temptations. Soon, others were poised to rival Gordy as a key writer / producer, but he did re-assume his position at the creative helm of Motown in the late 1960s -early 70s. During this period, he helped write hits for Brenda Holloway and his premier act, Diana Ross & The Supremes. Next, he contributed to the composition of early hits by The Jackson 5, including 4 US #1 singles: "I Want You Back", "A.B.C.", "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There". These singles were credited to 'The Corporation', of which Gordy was a part.
