BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER:
SIMON & GARFUNKEL

 [1970]
Nothing Paul Simon had ever created prior to 1970 surpassed the duo's best album,  'Bridge Over Troubled Water'. The title track itself remains a beloved epic that combined the might of his soothing lyrics and the angelic beauty of Art Garfiunkel's vocal. The songs that follow travel down disparate musical routes which can make the album seem patchy and uneven, but the disc is nevertheless a treasure trove of delights. Garfunkel shines again on "So Long Frank Lloyd Wright". Simon sought inspiration from Peruvian folk singers for "El Condor Pasa". The duo reach lofty heights with other delicate songs such as "The Boxer", "The Only Living Boy In New York" and "Cecilia". Fortunately, the mood is more cheerful on the tracks "Keep The Customer Satisfied", "Why Don't You Write Me" and "Baby Driver". Simon & Garfunkel were inspired by The Everly Brothers and they cover that duo's "Bye Bye Love". Closing the album is the sweet tune "Song For The Asking". 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' was such an accomplishment, it would be the duo's final album. Sinon & Garfunkel split and launched solo careers, but this record remains a watershed moment.
