This single was written by Stevie with 3 others.
First was Lee Garrett, a friend he met while both attended the Michigan School
for the Blind. Second was Syreeta Wright, who would become Stevie’s first wife.
The working title was “Nothing For Nothing”. Lula Hardaway, his mother, suggested
the new name for the song. Once recorded, a copy was sent to Berry Gordy who
immediately recognized its potential. The disc reached #1 R&B and #3 Pop in
America. In Britain, it climbed to #15.
