SONGS

MATTER

Some remain iconic; some were a call to arms; while others imagined a world where prejudice and injustice ceased to exist. Here are 100 songs by black voices that are the soundtrack to the struggle that continues to this day for equality, respect and dignity. They serve to carry the message that Black Lives Matter.

SAY IT LOUD-

I’M BLACK AND I’M PROUD

James Brown

The Godfather Of Soul knew how to rally his community with a snap message wrapped around a funky beat. Unleashed in 1968, “Say It Loud- I’m Black And I’m Proud” soon was crowned an anthem for the civil right movement and black empowerment. You could chant it or dance to it; the song definitely made it cool to be African-American at the right time.
