SONGS

MATTER

Some remain iconic; some were a call to arms; while others imagined a world where prejudice and injustice ceased to exist. Here are 100 songs by black voices that are the soundtrack to the struggle that continues to this day for equality, respect and dignity. They serve to carry the message that Black Lives Matter.

A CHANGE IS GONNA COME

Sam Cooke

Most social commentary songs focus on the struggle. Sam Cooke tackles the pursuit of civil rights, but injects hope for a future where genuine equality thrives. Part gospel, part soul and part blues, Cooke created a black response to Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In The Wind”. It was issued as a single days after his murder in 1964: a timeless epitaph for one of soul’s finest vocalists.
