MATTER

Some remain iconic; some were a call to arms; while others imagined a world where prejudice and injustice ceased to exist. Here are 100 songs by black voices that are the soundtrack to the struggle that continues to this day for equality, respect and dignity. They serve to carry the message that Black Lives Matter.

WHAT’S GOING ON

Marvin Gaye

A black “Imagine” served up by Marvin Gaye. He left behind the light pop of his previous Motown recordings to spotlight the issues that concerned him in 1971. His brother had just returned from Vietnam. Civil unrest plagued his community. Despite protestations from label chief Berry Gordy Jr., Gaye held firm and released his ‘What’s Going On’ and delivered Motown one of its finest albums.
