2004

A record 36 countries competed in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest. Istanbul was the host city, the first time the ESC was held in a transcontinental location and an Islamic-majority nation.

Due to so many countries wishing to participate in 2004, for the first time, a Semi-Final was held to determine which entries would qualify for the Grand Final.

Four countries made their debut in 2004. All 4 had to compete in the Semi-Final in the hope of progressing to the Grand Final. In order of appearance in the Semi these nations were: Belarus, Andorra, Albania and Serbia & Montenegro. The former 2 countries failed to qualify.

Andorra’s most recent participation was in 2009. It is the only ESC participant that has never qualified for a Grand Final. There is speculation concerning a return for Andorra in 2022.

Belarus was disqualified in 2021 because its song was deemed political and therefore in breach of the rules. The nation will be able to return in 2022.

Both Albania and Serbia competed in the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest held in Rotterdam. Serbia sent its first individual entry to the ESC in 2007 and won. Montenegro first competed in its own right in 2007. Its last participation was in 2019.
